Juror's Comments

Christine Camilleri, AFCA, MPAC - EP, IAPS M/C

Jurying an art show has to be one of the most difficult positions to be in. I believe everyone who enters deserves recognition because we are all on different paths on this art journey.  For sure, we develop more fully as artists when we see what our peers are up to and which paintings get the recognition. I also know, though, that for many of us it’s about painting what we like.  The act of painting is our motivation and our reward.

Here are some things I looked for (not ordered in importance because ideally they all work together):

Some sense of creativity:  was there a story or narrative being told and if so, what could that story be? Was it intriguing so that I looked a long time trying to figure it out? Was I as a viewer involved?

Were there distracting elements? Awkward designs? Was colour harmony thought about? Upon closer inspection did the pastel marks look fresh and clear?

Was the subject engaging as a work of art: did it show feeling, expression, interpretation of the subject, energy and movement to direct the viewer’s eye?

I am asked to write only 150 words and there is so much more to say but in closing thank you for allowing me to be part of your art journey.

All the best, Christine Camilleri, AFCA, MPAC – EP, IAPS M/C

Susan White MPAC

I was honoured to have been chosen to be one of the jurors for this show. It was my first time taking on a role like this. I took the responsibility very seriously, as I know what it is like to muster the courage to enter a juried show. Kudos to all who entered!

There was quite a diversity in the entries, in both subject and technique. My eye is always drawn to strong composition and elements that direct the viewer’s eye within the planes of the painting. I looked for sound drawing skills, particularly in realism-based paintings. Technical adeptness in the application of pastel and surface quality was also a key factor for me. The pieces that stood out for me ticked all the boxes technically, but also displayed creativity and a unique approach to their subject matter.

I enjoyed seeing all the animal entries that were vying for the inaugural Heather Laws
award. The paintings depicted the emotion and connection we have to our furry friends.

This was one area where drawing skills were key and showing an understanding of the subject beyond the reference photo.

I would like to congratulate all the award winners, participants and those working behind the scenes to make this show happen. For those whose work was not chosen, I encourage you to keep on painting from your heart and keep on entering!

First let me say, what on honor it has been to be a part of the jury for this year’s exhibition.

All the entries were of such a high caliber that it made picking winners a difficult task.

I’m always impressed by the talent exhibited by our membership across the country. But certainly a few stood out from the pack. For me those were the ones that showed not only exceptional command of the medium but also had what I like to call, the stop and stare quality.

That’s when you see a painting and you can’t stop staring at it. There were definitely a few of those among the entries.

Congratulations to all the winners and also to everyone who entered. Well done!
