Meet our JurorS

Susan Typert MPAC-EP, SCA

Whether working in oils or pastel, Susan’s style is painterly. Her work has been described as “loose realism with the touch of a colourist”. She enjoys unapologetic mark making and the richness that pastel and sanded paper offers.

Pushing the traditional boundaries of the medium by extending the frontiers both in subject matter and application, she wants you to see evidence that she was present and vital in the moment.

An award-winning artist, Susan manages an advertising agency full-time and leans into her art for creative work-life balance.

1st Place: Susan Typert, Vancouver Bound

Clarence Porter PAC, MPAC, PSA

“As an artist, my job is to see and translate my visual and emotional moments into pieces of art that allow you to see, feel and be in my moments.” Clarence worked in the Toronto advertising world as an art director/freelance illustrator in a career spanning 30 plus years. Moving to Hamilton Ontario, Clarence pursued working in soft pastels and after receiving an Honourable Mention in the 2006 Purely Pastels Exhibition, he never looked back.

Clarence’s work is represented by Earls Court Gallery in Hamilton.
Clarence is an instructor at the Dundas Valley School of Art, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and occasionally, the McMichael Art Gallery. Clarence has also instructed Zoom workshops throughout Canada and North America, and conducts private online mentoring sessions.

Ron Underhill MPAC

I live in the Southern Gulf Islands of BC where island life is close to nature, full of community spirit and home to many artists who are inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Whether travel sketching, painting outdoors or working in the studio, art for me is about presenting an interpretation of the subject by telling a story for the viewer. My artistic goal is to always improve. Drawing always interested me and upon retirement I discovered pastels with the help of fellow artists on island.

Pastel is an extraordinary medium of immediacy than can be applied like drawing or as painterly brush strokes to achieve soft and hard edges, vibrant colour and texture. For me, learning is a life long quest and art is one of those wonderful activities that can be pursued at any age.
