I am a dentist by profession but have been actively painting in pastel for nearly 20 years. I have mainly learned through workshops, online lessons including Patreon and many hours at the easel. I have been awarded eminent pastelist (EP) status by Pastel Artists Canada and recently achieved signature status in the Pastel Society of America, having had the required three acceptances in their annual exhibition. Watercolor is the perfect medium with which to create the foundation of a pastel painting. It can be used simply as a toner for the paper base or more elaborately to set up for value and temperature choices as well as color harmonies. In this demonstration I will begin by painting a watercolor under painting, then, while the paper is drying, show some examples of work I have done where I have photographed the under painting followed by the finished piece. I will then do some pastel application and answer questions as time permits.
