ICAN – Studio A (West)
Thursday, June 1, 2023
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Understanding colour can bring your painting to life. This session will demystify the choices available to you.

You’ll learn (among other things):

  • various colour schemes
  • the beauty of colour harmony
  • how colours react with each other
  • overcoming the usual colour choices
  • importance of greys

Pre-order your supplies from Studio Six or Wyndham Art Supplies at a discounted rate* and have them delivered to the conference! See Studio Six offer details. See Wyndham Art Supplies offer details.

Workshop Material List

Material List

Participants are asked to bring easels if at all possible.

All participants are required to bring drop cloths.

  • Three supports of your choice for the exercises (whatever you normally use) or just plain Canson Mi Tientes will work! Size can be an 8 X 10, 9 X 12, 12 X 16 — I encourage you to go small since it’s much easier to work with when learning concepts.
  • Pastels, pencil, gloves, paper towels
  • Conté stick (conté stick is preferable to a pastel pencil) black or brown
  • Color Wheel (the one I use is The Artists Color Wheel) available for purchase $8.00
  • Gray Scale Chart or Value Finder — a very useful tool. I received mine from Richard McKinley, a fabulous pastellist and instructor, so many years ago now and use it every day I am in my studio. I will bring photocopies if you don’t have one.
  • Scissors
  • Sketch book or newsprint
  • Note paper and pen

Photo References (very important!)

  • Bring along several of different subjects that interest you. As many as you can! With the exercises we do it will be easier if you print them off vs leaving them on your computer/IPad. We will be using these in the class discussions and exercises.
  • If you want to rework a painting you’ve already done then photograph it and print it in black, white and grey (this will be a very useful exercise for you if you had trouble with the painting).
  • Please make sure your photo references are SIMPLE with strong shapes and clear lighter and darker areas.
  • Print them in black and white or photocopy them so they show only black, white and greys.

Find Your Artistic Expression

ICAN – Studio A (West)
Friday, June 2, 2023
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Full-Day Workshop

Photos are great tools but we often struggle to express ourselves without being “tight” and hung up on details.

This session will help you paint a familiar subject and approach it with loose freshness and creativity.

You’ll learn:

  • the power of suggestion
  • to make the photo reference work for you
  • to tell a story
  • how to move away from the usual colour suspects

Pre-order your supplies from Studio Six or Wyndham Art Supplies at a discounted rate* and have them delivered to the conference! See Studio Six offer details. See Wyndham Art Supplies offer details.
