Jurors Comments

Fred Fielding, MPAC-EP

It was truly a pleasure to view the works submitted, the entries show a strong
commitment to the painting process and show the beauty that pastel is capable of,
making it difficult to rate them on a scale.

Being as objective as possible, I tried to distill each entry down to basic principles, considering composition, value ,color temperature
and competence in the application of pastel.

Pastel artists.ca has many very talented
members which makes acceptance more challenging and members not selected should not be discouraged but
hopefully more inspired to continue working on your craft.

It was an honour to be invited to participate as a juror for the 36th Purely Pastel Open
Juried Exhibition. The responsibility was not something I took lightly, and I felt grateful to
be included in the process, entrusted with the opportunity to engage so closely with
such a talented and diverse group of artists.

I found myself looking not just at the technical skill on display, but at the feeling and
intention behind each piece.  I was especially drawn to the use of colour throughout the
exhibition. In some pieces, colour was handled with boldness and energy, while in
others it was more subtle and atmospheric, but in all cases, it played an important role
in shaping the mood and impact of the work.

The exhibition itself is a beautiful celebration of soft pastel work. What stood out to me
was the individuality of each artist. From quiet, contemplative landscapes to more
vibrant and expressive works, the range of styles and interpretations made the jurying
process both challenging and rewarding.

I am grateful to have played a small role in this exhibition and extend my sincere
congratulations to all participating artists.  I feel inspired to create!

Fellow pastelists, to view and sit with your creative expressions for this show was a joy and an honour! Such variety in every way …so the joy and the challenge! I was grateful to be part of the team with Ingrid and Fred!

Initially, I did a quick run through noting paintings that impacted me, consciously attempting to lay aside personal bias. Tougher than one would think.

Painting by painting, I then, evaluated through twice slowly. Was there a sense of flow through the painting directing my eye? Was there composition, value structure, and color harmony throughout the painting? Had dynamic shapes, interesting edges been designed with purpose? Were drawing, perspective, and particularly the light and shadow handled well? Did the painting have a sense of presence? Did it captivate and draw the eye around the entire surface? What enhanced? What detracted?

On the last pass through I considered how each painting worked as a whole. Some had exquisite areas but were missing elements. Some paintings were louder, dramatic pieces. Some were like a quiet, gentle song but drew as strongly. Some had a wow factor - that rather illusive combination of presence and design, a developed finish, or sometimes the last little touch of pastel that makes the whole piece suddenly sing.

Congratulations to each artist! If this was your first submission and it was successful, huge congratulations! If your submission wasn’t accepted - keep painting, learning, and try again!
