Meet Our Jurors

Roberta Combs MPAC-EP

Roberta Combs has achieved Master Status or been designated an Eminent Pastelist in every pastel organization with which she is affiliated.

Her paintings have been exhibited in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
She has won First Place in Pastel Journal magazine's Pastel 100 competition three times, along with numerous other placement awards. Her work has been featured in International Artist, Pastel Journal, Southwest Art and North Light Books.

As a juror, Roberta looks for paintings that demonstrate a strong and balanced composition and a range of values and colour to support the design.

Artistic individuality is important but so is technical skill. Any narrative that brings drama, and visual impact will invariably encourage viewers to pause and appreciate the artist’s unique vision, allowing exceptional work to stand apart. I look forward to seeing your best work.

Paul Vincent MPAC

I've always been drawn to interpreting nature and how humanity shapes it, sometimes underpinning it with a mathematical framework. What I'm really chasing is a feeling, a sense of time and place that captures how elusive memory and experience can be.

What I love about pastels is the immediacy of the medium and the sheer brilliance of colour. Drawing has always been natural to me, and honestly, chalk in hand has always felt more natural to me than a brush.

I make my own surfaces on heavy paper, building up an acrylic underpainting in low key colours, then adding a transparent ground with plenty of tooth, so the brush marks may still peek through. And then, if I'm lucky, a little bit of magic happens.

Jane Romanishko MPAC

Jane Romanishko, MPAC, holds a degree in Art Education and a master's degree in Architecture. Trained in Russia in the classical European tradition, she works with ease in oil, watercolor, and pastel.

Her work has won top honours in prestigious national and international exhibitions, including IAPS, PAC and CIPA.

Jane has a deep curiosity about traditional cultures and is passionate about portraying people in their natural environment. Her extensive travels have given her a profound understanding of traditional ways of life, which she captures with sensitivity and authenticity in her portraits. Her work is held in private collections in North and South America, Europe, and Australia.

She divides her time between Calgary and Mexico, where she facilitates art retreats during the winter.
