Andrew is the past President and a senior member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Andrew was born in Bolton, England and moved to Canada at a young age. Upon College graduation in Graphic Design and Illustration, he studied and further refined his own unique style, winning top awards in both Canada and the US. His personal favorite is the Eminent Pastelist Medallion for the International Association of Pastel Societies, that will be presented in New Mexico in 2026. Having many published articles, including The Artist magazine 25 under 40. Andrew has also had full feature articles in top art magazines such as International Artist, The Artist UK, Pastel World, Magazin'art, and the Pastel Journal. Andrew is a popular workshop Instructor and gives demos and lessons at many educational facilities, he is a life/figure drawing Instructor for the Illustration and Animation department at Capilano University, and for the 3D/ACA/CA Animation departments at the Vancouver Film school and Think Tank.

Full-Day Workshop

In this workshop you will learn how to develop and approach a city scene, learn how to edit and create a visually interesting pastel work. Learn some tips and tricks to help you in your creative development. Andrew will share his process and knowledge he uses to create visually lush impressionistic pastel paintings. In this workshop we will learn how to create textures to create visual movement in our scene. In addition, we will learn how to build colors over vibrant underpainting to create lights and shadows. Finally discussing the importance of color choices, values, edges and shapes.

Pastels
What Pastels you have, more the better but at least a good variety of color soft Pastels. Brands such as Terry Ludwig, Blue earth, Jack Richeson, Art Spectrum, Sennelier, Mungyo etc. are great…also some Grays and a White….

Pastel Pencil
Also 1 light colored pastel pencil (any light color)

Paper/Surface
Either 1 Dark UART P400 4 ply Board 12×16 OR 1 Sennelier La Carte Pastel paper 19.5”x25.5”
(cut downsize for travel 12×16) Charcoal or if not in stock Dark Gray

Other

  • Masking tape
  • Wet Wipes or rag/cloth
  • Easel is optional or can work flat
  • Drop cloth

From a landscape to street scene, watch Andrew tackle different scenes from the landscape to the urbanscape. Emphasis will be placed on developing a painterly approach with pastels on mid-tone and/or dark paper. Watch how to develop unique color palettes, layer color, contrast warm & cool hues, build form abstract with value and play with edges and textures.
