Masoud painting at an easel in for foreground with a young girl in a frilled dress sitting for a portrait in the background

It has always been this dance of light and shadow that attracts me to the subject. Most of my paintings are figures in a natural setting that evoke a sense of timeless idealism. I strive to convey that sense of the scene through the spontaneous dance and movement of the colors over the canvas either by brush or my fingers.

Masoud Habibyan's passion for art began in childhood, growing up in a family of artists. He started drawing at age five and quickly demonstrated exceptional talent. By 11, he earned recognition for his advanced skills, which set the foundation for his lifelong dedication to art. Specializing in drawing and anatomy during high school, Masoud created over 30 drawings daily for several years and graduated at the top of his class. He later earned a Bachelor of Design and worked as an animation project manager before fully committing to his career as an artist.

Masoud’s work has been inspired by old masters like Ilya Repin, John Singer Sargent, and the French Impressionists. He has studied with Jeremy Lipking and Robert Johnson, with master artist Dan Gerhartz playing a significant role as a mentor in shaping his unique artistic voice. Renowned for painting figures in natural settings that evoke timeless beauty, Masoud is also a sought-after portrait artist known for capturing his subjects with remarkable accuracy. In recent years, he has won numerous pastel awards, been named among the Pastel 100 artists, and ranked in the Top 50 Artists by the Portrait Society of America.

Full-Day Workshop

The session begins with a live model. In the first half, I will conduct a live portrait painting demonstration lasting 2 to 3 hours. For the remainder of the day, students will work on creating a portrait from a photograph or the live model.

The primary objective is for students to apply the morning’s lessons, focusing on:

  • Color placement: Selecting and applying the right colors in the correct spots.
  • Blending techniques: Using hands or blending tools to mix colors and soften edges to create accurate forms and hues from the image.

I will provide individual guidance, reviewing each student’s work and offering solutions to any challenges they face throughout the process.

Pastel Portrait Demo

ICAN 2025 - Studio A West
Sunday, June 1, 2025
9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Demo

In this painting demonstration, I share insights into my creative process, starting with how I prepare and texture the paper. I explain how this texture can be used to create depth and enhance the painting's surface.

Next, I discuss lighting techniques, focusing on the use of both cool and warm lights on the model and how these choices affect skin tones and shadows. I also provide an overview of the materials I choose and explain why they are essential to my process.

Throughout the session, I answer questions from participants and conclude with a dedicated Q&A to ensure everyone leaves with valuable knowledge for their own artistic practice.
