Patricia Lindley

I have been working in pastels for 12 years and currently have work in two galleries in Halifax. In 2021 I started sourcing and experimenting with techniques and materials for a solo show in September 2023, and in 2022 I started creating large pastel paintings for this show. There were a total of 28 paintings in the show, the largest of which was a 10 ft wide triptych, along with pieces that are 60” and 48” wide/tall.

Over the years I have found that the act of creating a painting is like starting a new relationship – filled with anticipation, and not a little trepidation. It is the visceral response I have to a place, an image, an effect of the light that captures my attention and challenges my skill, that inspires me.

At the start anything is possible. I know that there will be struggles ahead, and that the image that will emerge in front of me will differ from to what is in my head. But over the years I have learned that that the best work that I do takes place when I let go of my preconceived vision and start to respond to what is unfolding on the easel. It is when I start to understand what the painting needs to be successful that I have a hope of achieving my goal.
