Joan’s original passion for horses led to her interest in art and she has never stopped to look back.
Joan has an extensive CV chronicling 40 years of professional achievements which include international shows, awards and documentaries. However it is the present and future that hold her attention. Her ground breaking series of artworks honouring the RCMP
Musical Ride has been used for exhibitions supporting non-profit organizations. This was followed by a series based on her trips to remote and restricted Sable Island to paint its most famous denizens, the wild horses.
Joan is a Senior member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (SFCA) and holds Master Pastelist designation with the PastelArtists.CA (MPAC).
Joan and her husband Paul Smith own and operate Creekside Studio from their acreage in the rural area of Coombs on Vancouver Island where they live with their family and assorted animals, including horses . . . which Joan states “are simply necessary.”

A step-by-step process from the initial drawing to rendering the finished animal.

- Topics we will cover include:
- How and where to start
- Life-like eyes

- How to use your darks
- Painting towards the light
- Layering your colours to develop depth

Mentoring (by appointment)
ICAN 2025 - Studio B
Wednesday, May 28, 2025
1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (20 minute slots)
ICAN 2025 - Gallery Area
Saturday, May 31, 2025
1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (20 minute slots)
Each registrant will be given a 20 minute slot between 1 and 4 on the day that they have registered for. Joan will be in touch with your specific time shortly after registration.
This session is specifically for each individual to receive focused time, attention and input from Joan. She will help you to critically assess your work and give guidance based on her years of experience.
The idea for the mentoring sessions comes from Joan's experience as both a professional artist and a seasoned juror. So many times as she was jurying a show, she found herself saying "if I could just have this artist for a few minutes . . . "
During this session Joan will work with you directly to help you gain further insights into how to grow your talents and application of the pastel medium.
In order to do this I must be able to see your work. If at all possible, bring original artwork(s). If not, then please bring images loaded onto a tablet or laptop.
I’m not particularly “techie” but will have a macbook air with me (if that helps). The larger I can view the images, the better.
Be prepared to take notes.
