About the artist, John A Root, PAC
John, an active member of the Pastel Artists of Canada, has taken up painting with pastels and acrylics since his retirement after 50+ years (33 years of teaching in Wellington County; 17 years working in the jewellery trade, and also as Director of Exhibits at the Stratford Festival Theatre). Originally his creative endeavours have centred on drama, and photography, but now his paintings explore his experiences within his hometown of Rockwood Ontario, and his travels abroad.
John works mostly in soft pastels and acrylics, with occasional forays into mixed media. His style is best described as ‘naturalism’ which seeks to represent reality not in the hyper-realistic way of photographic realism, but in the way that the human eye and brain actually perceive the world. Thus, areas outside the main focal point may be soft-edged and indistinct, just as they are in our peripheral vision. He is influenced, as well, by the effects of light so well conveyed by the masters of Impressionism. He has studied with a number of well-known Canadian and American artists, and hopes to have integrated their teachings into his own distinctive style.
John is mostly inspired by his immediate surroundings, and hopes that his work will help viewers to see the beauty in the everyday world.
An award-winning artist, John has had several successful solo shows, resulting in requests for commissions and similar shows. His paintings are now being collected locally, across Canada and internationally. In 2017, John was honoured to have one of his paintings published in the New Zealand Artists Magazine.
